Quebec spammer must pay Facebook $1 billion

A Quebec man has been ordered forced to pay Facebook more than $1 billion in fines for spamming.

The Quebec Superior Court issued a judgment last week upholding a ruling in a California court that ordered Montrealer Adam Guerbuez to pay $1,068,928,721,46 U.S., which includes punitive damages for each of the 4,366,386 spam emails that he sent Facebook users in 2008.

The emails promoted medication to treat erectile dysfunction, among other ailments.

Guerbuez did not contest the charges, and offered no defence. He appealed the ruling to Quebec because his lawyers believed the damage claim was "disproportionate."

However, Justice Lucie Fournier sided with the California court, and forbade Guerbuez from having a Facebook account or being involved in any way with the social-networking site.
