Sandy Bridge Rig
Just built a Sandy Bridge rig with a Core i7-2600K, Asus P8P67 EVO, 8 GB G.SKILL RIPJAWS X series RAM (4GB x2), and an Asus nVidia based GTX460 graphics card. Slapped it in a Lian-Li PC-8NWX case mid-tower... and so far so good. Running only Ubuntu 10.10 at the moment. Will dual boot Windows 7 on it this weekend if time permits. And I will use this thread to post some very unflattering pictures of the rig. Perhaps I will spice things up by posing in something that reveals some man cleavage.
:HAHA:
I'll add that I really like the Lian-Li case though it has a windowed side panel and limited cable management. Only running one ODD and HDD in it at the moment as funds for an SSD were not there... Wife used VETO power on my purchase.

Re: Sandy Bridge Rig
Photos are on hold gents... My CPU fan died... Went with the stock cooler and it quit on me... Had just installed Windows 7 and she was freezing up... Went into the BIOS and the CPU temp was sky high, looked and and no fan blades spinning... Pulled the cooler off and could not get the fan blades spinning on another rig. Ordered a Thermaltake cooler and am awaiting shipment... Probably next weekend for the pics.... wait... daughters birthday next Saturday and Super Bowl weekend... Might have to be mid next week... sorry... perhaps I'll get those man-cleavage shots up after all!

Superbowl party and Man Cleavage is too much info...
Sorry to hear of the fan problems. hope there was no damage to the CPU?
And keep us updated. Good luck!

Re: Sandy Bridge Rig
Well, told my buddy of the woes this evening and he had a spare Corsair A50. Just finished putting that beast on... I'm typing on it right now... will hit memtest+ on it overnight and see how she fairs. Snapped a couple of photos. Will get them off the CF in a bit and upload them and share. Gotta put the kids to bed.

Re: Sandy Bridge Rig
looks great Sith nicely done, what GPU did you put in this build? Does that board have the new BIOS on it I can't recall.

Re: Sandy Bridge Rig
nVidia GTX460 based (ASUS brand).
That CPU cooler is a beast. A little large for my taste and blocks the first ram slot.
Asus put out 1204 for the EVO board a couple days back. I applied it after I took those picks. Seems to be running ok so far. Running it on linux again, as I do little on Windows these days. Don't get me wrong, I like Windows 7... But I do alot of SSH type stuff for the job and linux is much better at that than Windows.... I do a lot of my photo hobby work in Windows and hobby time is lacking these days.

Re: Sandy Bridge Rig
Glad to hear you had a buddy that was close enough and able to help ya out in a pinch!
Looks like a decent mid tower case how do you like it? Are you gonna stay with that cooler or are you going to purchase something else? And what about overclocking? or does that stuff even interest you?
Thanks for sharing! :D:

Re: Sandy Bridge Rig
I really like the case and I was very nervous about going smaller than my CoolerMaster CM690. Turns out it looks amazing, has enough room for my simple needs (I am not a gamer). I don't like the USB 3.0 cables you need to run to the back for the front panel, but I am told Lian Li will likely sell and adapter at some point since the USB 3.0 header was not out when they released the case. Cable management was better in the CM690, but I purchased a modular SeaSonic PSU and it turns out not being to bad. It is very light and roomy and fairly silent. I do hear the new CPU fan, but it is a monster. I also hear the hard drive heads rattle, but it is up high on my desk and the drive cage mounts near the intake vent.
Here is a link to my case in case anyone is interested: Lian Li PC-8NWX
As far as over-clocking, those days are pretty much done for me. I am not in as much of a hurry for things, but I may dabble since the 2600K is unlocked and the ASUS BIOS makes it pretty easy and safe. Just gonna wait a bit. That CPU fan thing has me a little cautious right now.
As far as performance, I have only done one real measurable thing so far. Encoding one of our DVD's to a mp4 file for my kids iTouch with Handbrake. I did a real word test. SSH'd the VIDEO_TS folder to my AMD Phenom II 940 rig and configured the settings and hit Start on the Handbrake from both machines. The i7 2600K was done in about 40 minutes, the AMD is still going with 26 minutes to go (it had a few seconds head start too). Impressive? Sure, but I would normally do this in batch overnight.
Now, I'm back with an nVidia GPU. Sure, it is a newer model, but color looks better than the ATI I have on the Phenom II rig. 4800 series if I recall (have to look it had been 2 years!!!). I never had issues with nVidia and was a fan of them since the the original GeForce. I was not a fan of ATI and had nothing but issues with earlier version before the AMD merger. AMD made them reputable again. I cannot compare it to a current AMD model. Perhaps smduff can enlighten us there. I am sure it is a fine GPU and you really can't go wrong with either.

Re: Sandy Bridge Rig
I certainly understand being a little apprehensive about clocking or anything else after having a new CPU fan quit on ya!!!
Funny as this am when i started my rig i had a CPU Fan error which shocked me. I hit F1 to continue after a quick look to see if the fans where operating and they were.
I have been monitoring with Everest ever since and i even dropped my multiplyer down to 20 from 21 and upped the BCLK to 200 for a nice even 4.0 GHz clock down from the 4.1 GHz I was running and tested stable...
I hope you enjoy the new rig and certainly hope ya have no more fan issue!

Re: Sandy Bridge Rig
Thanks for the link to the case looks like a decent unit. Too bad there is no CPU bracket cut-out on the motherboard tray. Is the tray removable? And I like the ability to add a 140mm fan to the top of the case if desired!

Re: Sandy Bridge Rig
Tray in not removable, but there is enough room for my big paws to get around in it. Also want to add the PSU is top mounted and I like the mounting system for the PSU. Lian Li makes some quality stuff. First case I have owned from them and it will not be my last.

Re: Sandy Bridge Rig
Lian Li makes some great case you can't go wrong with them, same with SilverStone and then obviously you get into higher end cases like Danger Den and Mountain Mods which make custom cases.

Re: Sandy Bridge Rig
Got this from NewEgg.com and thought I would share:
Thank you for giving us the opportunity to serve you. Newegg has recently become aware of a design issue that is affecting recent models of Intel Sandy Bridge platform motherboards. We are working with Intel to identify the exact nature of this problem.
As always, Newegg remains 100% committed to our customers' total satisfaction. In keeping with our commitment to our customers, we are extending the return period for your motherboard by 90 days or until replacements become available from the manufacturer, whichever is greater. Intel expects to have a new revision of the P67 & H67 chipsets out around April, at which point first-run motherboards with this issue will need to be physically replaced in affected systems.
From a technical standpoint, the design issue can be bypassed fairly simply by not using the Serial ATA (SATA) ports that are affected. Your motherboard’s manual should identify your SATA ports by number, and at a minimum you should see ports 0-5 (6 ports in total) listed. Ports 0 and 1 are Sata Rev. III (6Gbps), and do not appear to be affected by this problem. Ports 2-5 are SATA Rev. II (3Gbps) and should not be used. For a thorough explanation of this hardware work-around, please refer to our video on YouTube:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tJcE2alQPvY
If you choose to use the hardware work-around option, there is no need to contact us at this time. We have your information on record and will email you as soon as the replacements become available. If you would like to discuss this with our tech community or read up on the latest updates, please visit our EggXpert forum:
http://www.eggxpert.com/forums/thread/682006.aspx
If none of the above options are suitable to your needs and you wish to return the board at this time for a full refund, please email us at intelsandybridge@newegg.com and include your sales order number so we can help you out with your return.
If you have any concerns, please contact Newegg Customer Service for further information and assistance.
Thank you for your support!
Sincerely,
Your Newegg.com Customer Service Team

Re: Sandy Bridge Rig
Got my e-mail from ASUS... Let the RMA process begin. Gotta tear this thing down and ship the motherboard back after they send me a FedEx return label/box. Stinks too... I had got it stabilized and screaming under Windows 7... Ubuntu, not so much.

Re: Sandy Bridge Rig
That is fantastic news Sith!
I think Intel has done a fantastic job alerting folks of the issue and producing a fix in a very short period of time!
We need some pics of the setup when ya get it all back and screaming again.
