HDD storage ?
I'm looking for info/recommendations for a decent HHD at a good price simply for storage purposes.
I intend to use a Mushkin SSD for the OS.
I've always used Western Digital in the past so I have no experience with Seagate and the others.
With that said, what about these WD Green drives? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136514&Tpk=WD20EARS
Thanks in advance!

Re: HDD storage ?
For reliability WD and Samsung would be top on my list.
Most problems I read about are for other makes I have a few WD 2500aaks drives still going strong (on 24/7) 2-3 years on. That said I have killed one too.
I have a samsung spinpoint f1 running 2 yaers and used for everything.. still good. I just bought 1TB spinpoint f3's as I wanted the faster drives but for just storage I would think that 5400 speeds would do just fine and 64meg cache can't do any harm.
Have a look see what the guarantees/warranties offered look like

Re: HDD storage ?
Steve, if you are looking at WD remember the Black series have a 5 year warranty. The Blue and Green only 3 years. I use the Blacks all the time.

Re: HDD storage ?
Manufacturer: Western Digital Cache: 64MB
Capacity: 2000 GB Access Time: 8 ms
Edition: Caviar Green Interface: SATA 3Gb/s
Form Factor: 3.5" Free-Fall Sensor:
Height: 26.1 mm NCQ:
Rotation Speed: 5400+ rpm
It is as fast as any other 2TB drives or as near as
It uses less power than most
What is to not like?
Edit the Blacks are faster and louder too if that concerns you

Re: HDD storage ?
I've always used WD Blacks myself. I've now changed in my plans and this will now be used in a extra PC I have and (not in my new build with the SSD) will just be an occasional used PC, so I thought I would go the cheaper route with one of these "green" drives.
My new build will use the SSD along with a WD Caviar Black I already have.
So :Thankyou: everyone for all of your input on this subject in helping me make my choice.

Re: HDD storage ?
Ok, another newbie question in relation to this subject.
Will I be able to swap the WD Caviar Black drive I have into my new build (for storage) and remove Win 7 from it and then do a clean install of Win 7 to my SSD without any issues?

Re: HDD storage ?
Do you have stuff on the black drive you want to keep? If no re-format.
EDIT: you might look at post 9-10 here: http://www.overclock.net/windows/505329-how-do-i-clone-windows-7-a.html

Re: HDD storage ?
Yes, I have lots of stuff I want to retain.
I was just curious after removing Win 7, if the other programs (some with paid licenses) will work correctly in the new system I would be installing into?

Can anyone let me know if this will be an issue?

Re: HDD storage ?
Yes to make it simple, save your keys and reinstall all your software will be a much easier road to travel

Re: HDD storage ?
I agree with Steve. Make sure you have all the programs and keys and do a complete reinstall. Make sure to change the drive letter when doing a install so they don't default to C which I presume will be your SSD.
