The Radeon 5850 is not a new graphics card, as it has been out for awhile now. However, we're now starting to see partners produce non-reference solutions, whether custom heatsinks, overclocked versions, voltage tweaks, and so forth. This is where these manufacturers can really start to show some innovation and offer consumers something different and better than the stock cards. Usually this means a slight price premium, but often the new cards' advantages far outweigh the minor additional cost. One of manufacturers well known for producing impressive non-reference cards is Sapphire Technology.
Lately we've looked at several of new DX11-capable 5000 series graphics cards from AMD, from the budget-oriented 5750, to the powerhouse 5870, to the behemoth dual-GPU 5970, and today we're looking at another, the 5850. But not just any 5850, this one is a limited edition Sapphire Toxic model, sporting a huge 2GB of memory, up from the usual 1GB. This should help when running antialiasing at higher resolutions, so we'll do exactly that on several very demanding games. But the Toxic also comes with the same impressive Vapor-X technology known for running cool and quiet, we well as a good factory overclock to boot. Gotta love this combination of features.

Let's take the Sapphire Radeon 5850 Toxic 2GB for a spin and see how it stacks up against the competition.

Thanks to Sapphire for providing the review sample.
