Anyone have a NAS?

Post by SithTracy on Thu May 05, 2011 6:07 pm

I just ordered a pretty basic NAS... Synology DS111... Looking forward to putting a 3TB drive in this thing for backups, storage, DLNA streaming, and whatever else I can do with it. A buddy of mine at work recommended Synology... Just wanted to know if any of you guys have one on your home network.

I did but i removed it. It was more of a headache than anything but it was a Patriot NAS and the support for it sucked.

I used to run them and if you use one with traditional sata drives they are fine (like the Synology). They have come a long way. I had a couple of WD's and a Maxtor that all failed in the first year. The ones I owned had sata drives, but had internal controllers that failed. I eventually built my HTPC and really don't have a need for a NAS. I don't know about the Synology's, but a lot of the NAS enclosures have crappy fans. You may want to check the stock fan specs and swap it out if they skimped there.

Will do... going to take a while to get to me... went with the budget shipping. Also got a great deal from NewEgg on a 3TB WD Green drive on the Synology compatibility list. That drive will get here before the NAS. Everything I am hearing on Synology is they are the top NAS devices available. Really looking forward to it. Wanted a two disk version, but the boss put the nix on it given that it cost $100 more for the empty NAS and I wanted 2 2TB drives.

NAS and disk arrived today. Took it out of the box screwed down the hard drive, and away I went. It formatted the 3TB, 5400RPM, 64MB cache green WD hard drive in about 10 minutes in EXT4 format. Created some shares, users, setup DLNA and tried this bad boy out. In a word, impressive. Certainly an excellent choice for a small home file server. I'm sure I will have more to say in the coming days about it... But the out of the box experience is very good.

Backups, file sharing (in the house -- multiple computers), and DLNA streaming to a couple of WDTV Lives in the house. Might add and external eSATA or USB2 drive to it and stream music via iTunes or something too, but if I do that I will want to put it in a cabinet or something and that will be another project that I don't have time for!!!
