Video Card

Looking to purchase a new video card for my old Dell Deminsion 2400. I have located one on newegg.com. Will this card work with Win7 and do some gaming? It supports DirectX 10, is this the right one for my computer? VGA EVGA/512-P3-N725-LR-8400GS RT.

Morning Tim ,

I edited your post as it was not normally visible. When this happens all you need to do in the text box is click the a/A button on the top right of the toolbar. This will allow the text to be seen fine without having to change colour or anything. We are all getting used to the setup here.

I found it hard to locate weather this system uses a older AGP or newer PCIE graphics port. If that link is the series of the system in question then i tend to think its AGP but we need to confirm the socket before making you some suggestions.

The card itself you mentioned is ok , a low performance budget card that will run most operating systems well. Gaming wise its pretty basic , you will have some use from it but Crysis / Assassins creed and call of duty would be problems.

What is your budget also Tim. ? We might be able to offer better alternatives for the monies available.

This system is for my 2 son's 11 & 13. It was given to me and I do not want to invest much because I want to upgrade mine. So a low priced card to aide Win7 and play some games is what I am looking to do. $$$ is an isue right now I just returned to work after unemployeed for almost a year, to top that I took a 65% decrease in wages, need the benifits. Enough of my sob story. As long as this card will work in this system and gives me DirectX 10 they will be happy. On Dell's site it is hard to figure out what I need other than ordering from them. This one is $39.00 & free shipping from Newegg.

No problem. That information helps narrow down the sort of card your after.

I will dig around and see if i can confirm that it uses PCIE or AGP. Then i'll have a look on the egg and give you some level price options for the money.

If this is the same Dell Dimension 2400 systems then they basically have a single integrated graphics controller , with NO expansion slots to mount external graphics at all.

One thing that is immediately noticed upon opening up the Dimension 2400 is that it lacks much future expansion room. Specifically, there is no place to add an extra hard disk, unless you were to jury-rig one onto the spare 5.25" drive bay. The present hard disk is locked into a vertical bracket screwed to the side of the case. The only other expansion space is provided by a single free DDR memory slot (for modules up to 512MB) and three PCI slots.

No AGP port is available, meaning that users will have to settle for the built-in Intel Extreme graphics, which are fine for normal usage, but cannot handle 3D games or multiple monitor applications. It is possible to buy low-end 3D gaming cards in a PCI format, though they can be hard to find.

Please let me know if this is the system you have Tim , as if not then there could be a chance you have an expansion slot. ??

Only other thing i can suggest is opening up the case and just visually checking for one. Then you'll know for sure.

But i now know these age machines would only take an AGP if available.

Yeah , i find that a bit of a dangerous game personally. Though this was the way with the older machines. People just bought them regardless of things like this. Now days users want their monies worth with all sorts of expansions and options within.
I am guessing even the likes of Dell and Packard Bell are making better options inside there machines now compared to before. They need the custom really and cannot afford to short change the customer any more.

The amount of users now building machines now is amazing. Its actually like going to the shop and buying one , just building it.

Id actually like to see a political figure to that in the last 10 years. I am guessing it would be interesting.
