CoolIT's Domino ALC Shroud And Fan(s) Modification. Empty CoolIT's Domino ALC Shroud And Fan(s) Modification.

Post by 4hams Tue Aug 17, 2010 12:33 pm

Hey folks I am planning to Mod my COOLiT SYSTEMS Domino ALC unit. However it is more work than you might think. I currently have it in the puter setup to draw cool ambient air into the rad and then into the case.
I am going to try a few different configurations using a shroud(s) attached to the radiator and then the fan(s).

Because the Domino ALC has a nifty LCD screen and due to the units design I will have to remove the unit from the computer and then dismantle the Domino. Let me explain...

The brain and the pump unit are both attached to the rad and a side panel. The connection for the fan is within the unit. So the unit has to be opened up so I can remove the 3 pin fan connector and put a 3pin y connector in it's place close the unit up and then i will have 2 3 pin power connectors for the fan(s).

When the Domino is in the performance mode setting it automatically sets and changes the pump and the fan speeds according to the temperature. So I do not want to loose that function of the Domino by simply attaching the 2 fans to the Motherboard headers that I have available.

Our friend and water cooling Guru Deton over at PUREOC.com has reviewed the new CoolIT Vantage ALC and it looks like a pretty nice unit. http://www.pureoverclock.com/article1043.html and in this discussion thread he speaks about the advantage of a radiator fan shrouds use. This is where I got the idea to Mod my Domino with a shroud to see if there is any change in performance.

Stay tuned for more details and my findings in regards to this little Modification.

Please feel free to comment or ask questions.

Hey folks here are some screen captures of my initial testing with the CoolIT Domino ALC.
My i7 920 is clocked @ 4GHz. The ambient temp in my office is somewhere around 24-26 degrees C.

Here is a screen of the temps when the computer is idle.

CoolIT's Domino ALC Shroud And Fan(s) Modification. ScreenShot094

The following are screen captures of a stability test done with Intel Burn Test and the temps were monitored with Everest and Core Temp.

CoolIT's Domino ALC Shroud And Fan(s) Modification. ScreenShot091

CoolIT's Domino ALC Shroud And Fan(s) Modification. ScreenShot092

The CPU hit 69 degrees C once during the test for only about 3 seconds then went back to 67 were it was for the duration of the stress test. Remember the Domino is installed and setup to suck cool room air into the rad and then case. The folks at CoolIT recomend the unit be installed as an exhaust thus helping to cool the inside of the case and the components. I agree with them if you have a lower end case where the air flow may not be very good. But the airflow of my CM SNIPER STORM (Black Edition) is fantastic so I wanted the best CPU temp possible with this cooler and set it up as an intake.

As an intake I get better overall CPU temps but the Motherboard temps rise about 3-4 degrees to about 35 degrees C.

Now that we can see the performance of the Domino with the one original fan and no shroud it is now time to start the mod and then back to testing.

Hi folks I have completed my testing. Earlier than I had expected due to the inability to mod the Domino for a Push/Pull setup. I did test with a 38mm fan shroud added to the radiator and the unit and the computer ran hotter than when tested without a shroud by a few degrees.

Here is a screenshot of the test and the temps.

CoolIT's Domino ALC Shroud And Fan(s) Modification. ScreenShot096

As you can see all the cores were 3-6 degrees hotter when testing with the shroud. The CPU temp also rose to 74 degrees which is 3 degrees higher than when testing without the shroud.

This could be due to the fact that I removed the unit from the computer to complete the mod so new thermal paste had to be applied and the test was run immediately following the install. The thermal paste used in both tests was Arctic MX-3.

Unfortunately I did not get the results Deton got when adding a shroud to the Vantage ALC he tested.

As for the Domino a push /pull setup is not possible because the side panel which attaches to the Radiator covers the side of the rad where you would bolt the fan to. The rad has the holes pre-drilled and threaded for a fan but as stated the LCD panel cover blocks the use of these 2 wholes.

Oh well maybe I will test the Corsair H50 I have had sitting here for about 8 months. I wonder if it cools as well as the Domino or maybe better?

Yes we have spoken. It was the same type of test with different cooling units and obviously the mod helps one unit and hinders the others ability to cool...

Glad I tried it as i actually like taring this thing apart once in a while... smile:

Nice job Joel.

I'd be curious to see you try out the Corsair H50 on your system.

I will get started on a mini Review of the Corsair H50 sometime this week. Stay tuned.

I think I will do a review of the system as it comes from the manufacturer. That means one stock fan setup as an intake at the back of the case.

Once the initial review is done I will then get into push/pull testing and possibly trying it with shrouds. I will have to check the RPM and CFM of the fan so i can make sure I have another identical for a push/ pull setup.

Thought I would throw those in just for kicks. lol!

Well I Installed the Corsair H50 this afternoon and it was a very easy install. The hardest part was removing the CPU backplate from the Domino install.

Post by 4hams Thu Aug 19, 2010 5:34 pm

Sorry Steve no pics as my digital bit the dust. This is purely a testing exercise for temperature only. Sort of like a fact finding mission.

I am really leaning towards picking up the H70 (which comes setup for a push/pull configuration and it has a much larger radiator) and a new digital camera so I can do a full review. I was gonna use one of the kids cameras and do a full review but there are a thousand H50 reviews on the net so I figured more pics of the packaging and components were not really something that people needed. And everyone knows what they look like by now...

As for installation the H50 is a breeze. I found it easier than the Domino due to the fact that the control panel on the Domino makes it very bulky.

When installing the H50 you mount the backplate with the provided 2 way tape then install the waterblock/pump hold down ring which is notched for the notches on the waterblock/pump. You have to attach the fan to the rad and the back of the case all in one shot. The screws provided go through the back of the case through the fan assembly and into the holes in the rad. All in all it is really a decent install setup. Everything fit together perfectly! Once the rad and fan assembly are attached you simply take the waterblock in one hand and push it through the hold down ring, give it a slight twist clockwise and then tighten the four screws for the hold down ring.

Ok here ya go Steve...

Ok, thanks Joel.

I'm interested in this because at some point when I do my next build I was looking to go with the H50 and now maybe the H70 since it is available now, whichever I can get a real deal on. :D:

Steve, it is a very simple install, just make sure you have a 120mm fan position to install the radiator in. If not you will have to mod the case as I had to do.

You guys are TOO MUCH. LOL

I installed the H50 back on the 19th of August and it has been running very well. Temps were almost the same as the Domino withing a degree but the unit is far quieter than the Domino. I installed the H50 as an intake with just the supplied fan to see how it performed compared to the Domino.

Before we went out yesterday I setup the H50 in a intake push pull configuration to see how much better the cooling would be. The details will follow in a new thread later today.
